Colorado Technology Association Launches State’s Inaugural SheTech Explorer Day!
On June 8, Colorado Technology Association hosted its inaugural SheTech Explorer Day Colorado — in partnership with AT&T, Digital Globe, the United States Patent and Trademark Office and more than 15 community and industry partners — to provide nearly 60 high school girls from across the Front Range with a fun-filled, STEM-packed day focused on career exploration, skills awareness and hands-on workshops.
Students participated in a TechZone with nine hands-on, industry-led activities and two immersive workshops focused on solar energy, coding, augmented and virtual reality, circuitry, satellite imagery, computer hardware, and more. The day concluded with a TechChallenge designed by Zayo, where girls broke into mixed teams of eight to design a localized, sustainable food system; teams pitched their ideas to a judging committee, and members of the winning team (pictured below) each received a technology prize ($500 value) and the chance to attend CTA’s Women in Technology Conference in Larkspur the following day.
Today’s tech workforce suffers from a lack of diversity, and fewer women are pursuing technology-focused careers. The numbers of girls and young women pursuing computer science and other technology courses and degree programs are not where they can be, and programs like SheTech help to spark greater interest in postsecondary education and careers in tech fields.
SheTech was originally created by the Women Tech Council in Utah. The first SheTech Explorer Day in 2015 had an overall reach of roughly 100 girls interested in STEM; since then, the program has grown to reach more than one thousand girls per event. Colorado Technology Association is the first organization to bring the program beyond Utah, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with our local tech community and education partners to make Colorado’s inaugural SheTech Explorer Day a marked success!
We look forward to growing this impactful program into the future, and we hope to see you at next year’s SheTech Explorer Day Colorado! Stay tuned for more information on how to get involved with the program in 2018.
